When you bring 3 million people into a multiplayer beta, you expect to get some good info out of it. In this case, that holds true. We already saw the beta help Bungie sort out some server issues, and convince them that they could handle the load of a Firefight Versus mode. Further, we've already seen some preliminary gameplay tweaks that came about from beta feedback.
But that was many weeks ago, and a lot has changed in Halo Reach since then. In addition to the obvious additions like new maps and new game modes, Bungie has made another round of gameplay tweaks based on feedback from the beta.
Here's a list of some of the changes. Some of them are a few weeks old, and some of them are brand spanking new.
* Increased run speed
* Increased jump height
* Grenades nerfed; smaller damage, smaller radius, smaller visual impact
* Spamming of armor lock removed
* Armor lock will no longer drain an opponents shield when they melee you
* Shield recharge time lengthened
* Encounter time increased
* Head shot characteristics of weapons altered
* Elites were overpowered; their shield recharge time has been increased.
* Invasion mode is now two rounds, one as Spartan and one as Elite
Thank god for the mitigation of the power of the grenade. Seriously, one grenade could kill you in the Beta with full shields. As for the run speed, diggs to that. In the Beta the Spartans were too slow and the Elites were like Zombies with swords flying everywhere. Overall, these changes were made to make the game more fair and more genuine of a playing experience and I think these were the right moves to make. You already know you'll be able to customize your Spartan. You already know you'll be able to customize your elite. Now, thanks to a recent interview with Joseph Tung, we've seen the way that elite or long-term players will be able to take this customization to a whole new, interactive level, thanks to Armor Effects.
Armor effects, which can be purchased in the Armory via a LOT of earned credits, will unlock various animations for your armor. Some examples of these are the grunt headshot party, which you can actually unlock for your own armor (so when someone shoots you in the head in a multiplayer match, your armor will spew confetti), and a lightning effect that animates on your armor.
We've got the list of the armor effects that have been revealed so far down below.
Grunt Birthday Party - 100,000 credits
When killed with a headshot in multiplayer, your head will explode in confetti.
Hearts - 200,000 credits
When you die, hearts will appear around your body.
Pestilence - 1,000,000 credits
Your armor will radiate a dark cloud of insects.
Lightning - 2,000,000 credits
Your armor will constantly radiate electricity.
This all sounds pretty cool, right? But did you check out those prices? Wow. Did anyone here consistently get more than, say, 500 credits per match during the Halo Reach Beta? At that rate you're looking at thousands of matches to unlock these things, which should keep them pretty unique.
Bungie has also said there will be more armor effects added later.
We all can't wait to turn on our new Xbox 360 Elites, Slim, Pro, or if you actually got a Xbox 360 that has lasted you throughout Halo 3 and more , than you are pretty fortunate. As we all know, the Beta definitely had a few glitches and needed revisions. One of these bugs hat Bungie took and smashed was the power of the vehicles. Bungie first beefed up the power and resistance of most of the vehicles, especially the lame banshee that seemed to have the power equivalence to a ghost only. No, Bungie was not going to disappoint you. They also changed the glitch of the vehicles exploding on their own and now they only explode from direct player damage. Another hole to fill was some kind of common weapon that could replace the versatility and prominence of the BR. As of now, Bungie has introduced a sweet sub-machine gun that is as deadly as it looks:
Amped Up SMG
Yes Halo hopefuls, the rapid fire SMG has transferred from Halo 3 to Halo Reach. But, in Reach, it is twice as powerful and still holds the deadly ability to blind your opponent in a blaze of fire, leaving his Aime jacked up. One of my favorite weapons to use in Narrows in Halo 3: dual-wield SMG'S. Why? Because it could take down all other weapons on the map at will [BR, Sniper Rifle, And Assault Rifle]. I assure you this gun packs lethal ability and will be a nice addition to the spread of close encounter weapons already introduced in Halo Reach.
As for the Armory of Spartans, we can now pimp our own player. You can customize ten parts of the armor [no I don't know if crotch is available for customization]! However, I know that the Spartan Armor looks baller and my personal favorite is the grenadier [not to mention the grenade launcher as the starting weapon]! So, snipers will be marked as snipers, Br tact men will be seen as formidable killers, and you will get a clear label as a Halo Reach gamer from your top commendations.
