Halo Reach Preluding Lower Sales For Black Ops

So now it’s official: Microsoft's first-person behemoth Halo: Reach is the year’s biggest entertainment event, generating $200 million in sales in just 24 hours in the United States alone.

That’s two-thirds of what Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 took in from the North American and U.K. markets in its first day last year, but it’s still a number that’s nothing to sneeze at. The one-day take already eclipses the three-day opening weekends of “Iron Man 2,” “Toy Story 3” and “Alice in Wonderland.”

While Microsoft is doing cartwheels, though, the rest of the gaming industry is nervously shuffling its feet. Despite a number of high profile releases, it hasn’t exactly been a banner year for game sales -- and the success of Reach might not help things.

The slump is due, in part, to the ongoing recession. But also deserving some of the credit is the lingering effect of Modern Warfare 2 – a game whose multiplayer component was so deep and so rich that it kept players hooked, reducing their need and desire to buy other titles.

Fatigue is finally starting to gradually set in for that game, but Halo: Reach may well pick up that mantle.

As much praise as the game’s single-player campaign is getting, it’s the rich multi-player mode that really has players excited. New armor abilities, new game modes and an impressive suite of creation tools have overwhelmed the Xbox Live user base with joy. And the game’s matchmaking service is working like a charm so far.

That’s a lot of reasons to play -- and could give buyers plenty of excuses to put off other purchases in the coming months.

“There’s always a worry that a game like that can take share and cannibalize other games,” says Colin Sebastian, an analyst with Lazard Capital Markets.

To add to worries, Call of Duty: Black Ops will be hitting shelves in less than two months – a one-two punch to other game developers. That could put a number of seemingly big titles on the bubble, their sales in jeopardy.

None seems in a more perilous position than EA’s Medal of Honor. The battle that was shaping up between the rebooted military shooter and Call of Duty was already a tough one, but with Halo: Reach potentially impacting people’s buying decisions, the game could face an even tougher challenge. (The game's controversial decision to allow players to fight as Taliban forces in multiplayer might not help, either.)

Medal of Honor is actually scheduled to hit shelves well before Black Ops, but it has been three years since the last version – and Call of Duty has become the industry’s biggest seller in that time. The hope, in part, was that the Call of Duty fan base would buy Medal of Honor as a placeholder while waiting for the release of Black Ops – but they could be too busy with Reach to do so.

Meanwhile other titles like Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II, Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit and Tron: Evolution, which all would normally appeal to the same general demographic, might be overlooked entirely.

“I see Halo: Reach creating a vacuum in multiplayer,” says Billy Pigeon of M2 Research. “I expect it will have an effect similar to ‘Modern Warfare 2’. People will be playing online and may not buy other games.”

Halo Reach:Second Thoughts

A Quick Tip For Earning Credits.....

After playing Reach for almost 9 days straight now, I think I’m ready to give a full review of it.

There is so much to cover in this review that I might be sitting here for an hour getting everything written. Firstly, the basics.

Halo: Reach is the prequel to Halo 1 (not the sequel to Halo 3, kids) and the best in the series in my opinion. The controls are great and the game runs very smoothly, and I’ve found no bugs or glitches in my time of playing. I expected nothing less than this when I heard of the game for the first time.

This game has the hardest campaign in Halo history, and I’m not just saying that. Grunts, Jackals, and Brutes are pretty similar to their Halo 2 (not 3, I really think they got dumbed down in that one) counterparts, but Elites are freakin’ HARD. Most are like Halo 1 Zealots, without the swords (most of the time). While it is hard, the storytelling is excellent, the best in the series. I think it’s the best campaign in the series for it’s difficulty and story.

Forge was introduced in Halo 3, and while clunky, was revolutionary for it’s time. Reach keeps the same ideas from 3′s forge, and improves on almost everything. Instead of tediously rotating and spinning blocks, Reach introduces rotation snaps, precision editing, and even COORDINATE EDITING. Instead of constantly dealing with the laws of physics, Reach lets you put objects in midair and even lets objects phase through walls. Reach’s forge is AWESOME. Custom games return, but, require a bit more work to execute than 3′s. I don’t want to explain it, but, there is a wonderful thread on bungie.net detailing how to do it. Theater mode remains relativity unchanged.

Most people know to buy Halo for it’s multiplayer, and I can’t agree more. You don’t have to play the already excellent campaign to love this game to death. Matchmaking is greatly improved, instead of individual rankings per playlist, you retain one rank for the whole game, which I like better because you can’t get matched with Captains all the time on Team Slayer. It even lets you choose whether to play with loud, quiet, rude, polite, lone wolves, or team players, but, it doesn’t always work like it should. It also introduces co-op matchmaking, which I really like. Firefight is now a gametype and not a mode, allowing for custom games to play with your friends. Cool.

Returning from Halo 3 is the File Share. File Share sounds like what it is, it lets you share gametypes, forge maps, and films with your friends. However, to keep more than six files in your share, you need to subscribe to Bungie Pro, which (I think) is ten greenbacks a months to share a ton of files at a time.

Reach is a wonderful game, and makes my #3 favorite game of all time. Problems, while there, are very sparse.

Halo: Reach Makes You A Better Employee, A Better Person

This Guy Has Taken Halo Reach Too Seriously!

September 15, 2010, 07:40 AM — Today's post is for all the Xbox gamers out there. How are you feeling this morning? A little blurry-eyed? Did that alarm seem to go off an hour too soon? Are you regretting staying up for one last match (several times in a row)? Yeah, a new Halo game will do that to you.

Yesterday's release of Halo: Reach was something of a momentous occasion. After all, it's the last (well, for now; these decisions have a way of reversing themselves) Halo game from Bungie. Plus it felt like the start of the holiday gaming season for this year. And running up to the release we all read the early reviews, most of which were quite favorable (and rightly so, in my opinion). The die-hard fans hit a Midnight Launch party Monday night, of course (by the time I woke up Tuesday morning I saw at least one person claiming to have finished the campaign already) but most of us had to wait until we got home from work yesterday to immerse ourselves into the Halo universe once again.

So we stayed up much too late, and some of us might be feeling a little guilty about that. But don't! You weren't up late playing a video game. No sir! You were up honing your decision making skills. Trust me on this, it's a scientific fact! A post over at Gamasutra yesterday detailed a study that demonstrated that people who played a first person shooter completed tasks more quickly, and just as accurately, as a control group who played some boring Sims 2 game. So if the boss comments on your haggard look this morning, just tell him you were training to be a better employee.

And tonight, remember that science is on your side. You owe it to your employer, to your friends and family, and to yourself, to play more Halo: Reach. You never know when that extra speed in coming to a decision will mean the difference between life and death! Or at least help snag a big sales contract or troubleshoot a systems problem more quickly. Heck, all things considered, it'd be irresponsible for you not to play tonight!

And if you're thinking this blog post seems pretty light on content, and that maybe this blogger was also up too late playing, well, guilty as charged. The adventures of Noble Team and number 6 had me glued to the Xbox. So I want to leave you with something a bit meatier to sink your teeth into over your morning coffee. Let's head back to Gamasutra again for a great piece on the Halo: Reach launch event that was held Monday night in New York City. It's a nice 'feel good' piece for fans of Halo. Enjoy!

Halo Reach Armor Effects

You already know you'll be able to customize your Spartan. You already know you'll be able to customize your elite. Now, thanks to a recent interview with Joseph Tung, we've seen the way that elite or long-term players will be able to take this customization to a whole new, interactive level, thanks to Armor Effects.

Armor effects, which can be purchased in the Armory via a LOT of earned credits, will unlock various animations for your armor. Some examples of these are the grunt headshot party, which you can actually unlock for your own armor (so when someone shoots you in the head in a multiplayer match, your armor will spew confetti), and a lightning effect that animates on your armor.

We've got the list of the armor effects that have been revealed so far down below.

Grunt Birthday Party - 100,000 credits

When killed with a headshot in multiplayer, your head will explode in confetti.

Hearts - 200,000 credits

When you die, hearts will appear around your body.

Pestilence - 1,000,000 credits

Your armor will radiate a dark cloud of insects.

Lightning - 2,000,000 credits

Your armor will constantly radiate electricity.

This all sounds pretty cool, right? But did you check out those prices? Wow. Did anyone here consistently get more than, say, 500 credits per match during the Halo Reach Beta? At that rate you're looking at thousands of matches to unlock these things, which should keep them pretty unique.

Bungie has also said there will be more armor effects added later.

Halo Reach The Most Anticipated Game Of 2010

Overture Inc recently compiled their GameVoice video game industry report, which searches out forum posts (to which we're sure we've all contributed our fair share), comments, twitter posts, and other social media outlets to find out which video game properties are being mentioned the most.

A result that surprised absolutely no one is that Halo Reach had the most mentions (and hence anticipation) of any upcoming game. What is surprising about the result is by just how much. Halo Reach had three times as many mentions as Call of Duty: Black Ops, which was the next most anticipated game, in spite of Halo Reach only releasing on one console.

We know that there are lots of you here that, like us, cannot wait for Halo Reach. Now, at least you know you're not alone. So, I provide you with a custom checklist of what you need to have to prepare for Halo Reach and come release day have endless gaming without any interruptions. Here's your list:

Intense Overview Of Halo Reach Weapons

Let;s start off with the staple of Halo 3, The BR or DMR in Halo Reach. I personally have a bit of a love-hate relationship with the Battle Rifle from Halo 3. Basically, I love to hate it. Yeah, yeah, that probably means I don't know how to use it. But I don't know how to use a curling iron either, but that doesn't mean I need to learn how. The BR was a jack of all trades and master of none. Janky up close and lacking at range. Luckily, the BR is out of the Reach beta in favor of the Designated Marksman Rifle. Oh, yes.

The DMR can be a lean, mean headshot machine if you know what you're doing. It's a bit unwieldy at close range, but at mid-to-long range it's deadly. Like the Magnum below, the DMR takes five shots to kill (make sure the last one nails the noggin). And thanks to its dampened recoil, it feels just like shooting womp rats back home. Slow and steady wins the race.

Gamers, we all know that Halo Reach is practically going to be a whole new, redesigned game than the Previous Halos , but fear not because Halo Reach includes all of your old favorites in Halo 3, maybe just more explosive, powerful, or with a new look. Yes, the Br is back only this time it's a single-shot DMR  that will kill with five precise shots with the last one hitting the head. The Sniper Rifle, assault rifle, SMG, needler, magnum, shotty, rocket launcher, plasma pistol, plasma gun, Energy sword and hammer, and plasma launcher all are back with new diggs. Here's a complete list of all the weapons [and grenades] that halo Reach is packed full of:

If the Halo: Reach beta is a delicious home-cooked meal, than the Assault Rifle is the meat and potatoes. It's the go-to-gun when you're in close and don't feel confident about your Magnum skills. Not terribly powerful but not particularly weak, the AR is your best friend in a pinch.

I use controlled bursts with the AR, mainly because it makes me look cool. But if you want to go in with your gun blazing, be my guest. Just be warned that the AR in the Reach beta is tilted more toward accuracy than firepower, so you might come up short when the jumping around and shooting starts. Oh, also, it has a really awesome stripe on it. That really shouldn't excite me as much as it does. I could have left this one out of the lineup because it hasn't really changed all that much from Halos past. But it's just so…. solid. Gotta mention it.

Focus Rifle
Focus Rifle

Just look at that gun for a second. If that doesn't look like a dangerous-ass alien weapon to you, then you are going to be useless in an alien invasion. To me, this is one of the coolest looking guns Bungie has ever designed. It looks like a crocodile snout crossed with one of those Dyson vacuum cleaners. Scary stuff, that. But it's not all looks. This thing backs up its evil exterior with some mean machinery.

You know those Forerunner Sentinel lasers from past Halo games? Well, the Focus Beam crosses one of those with the Covenant Beam Rifle favored by Jackal snipers. So it has the accuracy of a sniper rifle, the searing power of a continuous laser beam and, as an added bonus, a bit of a stun effect when it hits. It's truly terrifying to see this beast burning across the map. Great for picking Jet Packers out of the air, though. Flyboys, you have been warned.

Grenade Launcher
Grenade Launcher

The Covenant don't get to have all the ridiculous fun, though. The Spartans will be rolling into battle with the Grenade Launcher. This sucker fires standard frag grenades, but with a couple added bonuses. First, just like all frags in the Halo: Reach beta, they'll do a small amount of contact damage when they hit an enemy. Probably feels like stepping in front of a ball machine at the batting cage. Thump.

But the Grenade Launcher does another trick, too. Fire it normally to launch a 'nade and watch it bounce around before a timed explosion. Or, you can hold the trigger down when you fire. It'll hang out wherever it comes to rest, waiting for you to release the trigger and blow it. This is great for sabotaging vehicle paths or terrorizing teams at score points in games like Stockpile. As if that weren't enough, these little insta-mines also throw off an EMP blast when they detonate, popping shields as they go.

Magnum
Magnum

I bet you're going to like the power and shooting speed of this beast. Yes, like in Previous Halos the magnum has made its return and this time, has gone all in. The magnum is capable of taking down your opponent in a single round and it's performance is measured by your precision and shooting tactics.

Assault Rifle
AR
This high-capacity automatic weapon is a classic from Halo: Combat Evolved. It can fire up to 32 rounds before having to be reloaded, but each round inflicts only a small amount of damage. Attempting to fire for too long will result in the loss of a lot of accuracy. Nonetheless, the starting weapon in Halo Reach.

Spartan Laser
Spartan Laser
One of the major weapons returning from Halo 3 is the Spartan Laser, a powerful beam weapon that can toast just about anything in the game in one blow. It was arguably the most powerful handheld weapon in the game back then, but it requires a lot of skill to use properly. You'll find that it's still the epitome of  conflagration  in Halo Reach!Whenever you shoot this gun at something, it's going to blow up no question.

Shotgun
Shotgun
What was the shotty missing in Halo Reach? Range and close-out ability. Well, in Halo Reach the shotgun has more range and inflicts more damage with each shot [meaning that as the shield goes down it can pierce and devastate enemies better] . Yes, indeed gamers the shotgun is the go to weapon for you campers, stealthy types and for close encounters.

Sniper Rifle
Sniper Rifle
The Sniper Rifle is a powerful single-shot weapon that's designed to quickly eliminate foes from a distance, although it can be used at closer ranges. No scoping is still going to be a skill that can be mastered and this time around with better blown-up graphics, you'll be carrying it around with you into rooms and in sniper nests, although not recommended! The look of the sniper in Halo Reach is nothing short of awesome!

Grenade Launcher
Grenade Launcher
The Grenade Launcher is a shoulder-fired single-shot weapon that shoots explosive ammunition. Despite the name, it does not shoot hand grenades but rather its own shells. You can press down the trigger then release it when you want it to explode to take down an enemy vehicle or closing enemy or rather just press down the trigger and let it fly and it Will explode in a few seconds. Deadly in a room full of enemies.

Machine Gun
MG
The Machine Gun of unknown kind is happens to be new to the Halo: Reach arsenal. An MG is a very effective weapon against enemy ground forces and light vehicles. And best of all, it will still jack up your opponents' aim like in Halo 3. It's a SMG without the S meaning small damage. These MG'S can kill much faster than an assault rifle and have the ability , with armor piercing rounds, to take down a challenging vehicle.

Designated Marksman Rifle
DMR
The single shot weapon fits somewhere between the Sniper Rifle and Battle Rifle. It's deadly at range but a fast trigger and careful aim make it dangerous at close and medium range. This is different from the Br in Halo 3 because it shoots at a slower frequency and takes five shots [last one to head] to kill you opponent.

Combat Knife
Combat Knife
The Combat Knife is a multi-purpose infantry-sized knife used for close quarters. Although it is already known from Buck in ODST, it will now most probably make a game play appearance in Halo: Reach.

Carved Knife
Carved Knife
A different variant of the Combat Knife is the Carved Knife being used by an yet unknown Spartan Grenadier. Unlike the standard variant this one is attached onto the right shoulder.
Covenant Weapons

Plasma Pistol
Plasma Pistol
The Plasma Pistol is the most basic weapon in the Covenant armory. Each individual bolt inflicts a light amount of damage, making it useful only against weak enemies. If you hold the trigger, you can charge the plasma pistol for more energy.Like in Halo 3, it can stop enemy vehicles in their tracks leaving you a grenade throw away from a take- down.

Needler
Needler
The Needler fires small, explosive spikes that will home in on a target if fired in their general direction. These spikes do a bit of damage on impact but then explode a few seconds later, causing a great deal more damage to the target and anyone nearby. The Change from Halo 3, it no longer can curve, and go around corners as well and takes more skill and precision to use .

Needle Rifle
Needle Rifle
The Needle Rifle happens to be a mixture mid-range of Needler and Carbine. Three individual hits from the Needle Rifle will super-combine and explode.Very fun to use and one of my favorite weapons that I've tried in the Halo Reach beta.

Plasma Repeater
Plasma Repeater
The ultimate weapon to use to take down an opponents' shield and back with a cool new ability. It no longer overheats just shoots slower and slower if you don't let up on it so it can recharge. A favorite of the Elites in Campaign again and even more annoying when you're trying when facing an enemy one these blinding your aim.

Rocket Launcher
Rocket Launcher
Back and this time with heat-seeking abilities to take down all kinds of enemies. the rocket launcher has got a serious upgrade with the ability to take down any vehicle and the beastly explosion it creates. For real, it can explode half of a small room. Definitely, the beat of Halo Reach and the second most dominant force besides the Spartan Laser a s far as dominance.

Energy Sword
Energy Sword
The same as in Halo 3 only now the Spartan has the farther lunging range so they stole the show! Elites don't fret, because you still can combine the sword with the load-out ability stalker to create your own killing haven anywhere you choose. The sword hasn't been replaced by the cool new knifes introduced it still stands as  the weapon of choice for camo Elites and campers!

Gravity Hammer

Gravity Hammer
Yes, this is now a favorite if the Spartans and can be deadly when combined with airborne or stalker. A special-ops favorite for just about anything your imagination can think of from taking down vehicles, assassinating form the air, and racking up a few double kills. In  Halo Reach, the gravity hammer has longer range and is more lethal than it was  in Halo 3.

Grenades
Plasma Grenade
Frag Grenade

Now, in Halo 3 grenades were formidable but not lethal with one throw like in Halo Reach. Grenades, especially the huge plasma grenades,  can now kill with just one grenade and are much easier to stick and throw accurately because of their size and the improved graphics. Look to not waste these, because if your know where your opponent is coming form than these can  take him out before he even sees you.The flame and spike grenades have been exiled form Halo Reach because they were more confusing to gamers for selection than actual damage infliction.

So, what are we missing? The mauler, beam rifle, and carbine. These Three weapons have been dismantled and synthesized to create new and exciting weapons so we won't be missing any of these. Halo Reach launches on September 14 and is available blow at Amazon with free shipping  and an added $20.00 dollars credit given to you when you complete your purchase guaranteed:
